Next BDS evening meeting

Our next BDS evening meeting will be on Monday 22nd November 2021 at 6:00pm. The meeting titled “Hydropower Extension Projects at Tarbela Dam, Pakistan” will be presented by Brian B Darling, Mark D Gill and Gonzalo Montilla Castro (Mott MacDonald).

The presenters will discuss:

• The arrangement for the 5th Extension Hydropower Project
• Ongoing sediment management and how raised intakes are being adopted to extend the life of the reservoir
• Construction and commissioning of the T3 and T4 raised intakes plus the plans for the T5 raised intake
• Construction challenges and lessons learned from the 4th Extension Project and how these are being applied to the 5th Extension Project.
• How Physical and CFD models of the Dal Dara channel have been used conjunctively to confirm the operability of the tailrace culvert and canal system whilst ensuring the safety of the existing spillway plunge pools
• Recent photos from site showing the construction stage of the 5th Extension Project and comparing these to the 4th Extension Project

This meeting will be held live at the ICE (1 Great George Street, London) and also online. Refreshments will be served from 5.30pm, however, the ICE have not yet reopened the bar and therefore will be no bar facilities after the meeting.

BDS Prize Evening

The re-scheduled BDS Prize Evening will be held on Monday 10th January 2022. The results of the BDS Photo Competition will also be announced during this meeting.

The Great British Dam Bake Off

The Young Professionals Group are running a virtual baking competition for all BDS members as an engaging way to create learning resources for school children whilst showcasing the baking talents of members. Further details can be found on the event poster here. It would be great if as many BDS members and their families could take part in this fun event. Entries are needed by 29th November 2021.

Supervising Engineers’ Forum update

The Supervising Engineers’ Forum was held at the University of Nottingham on 16th September 2021. For the first time all of the technical sessions from this event were recorded. The BDS has completed editing these videos and is currently waiting for the ICE to host the files on its website. An email will be sent out to all members when the recordings are available to view.
