BDS Conference: I’m delighted to advise that we have already received some excellent feedback following the 20th Biennial BDS Conference in Swansea, and would encourage all attendees to participate in the survey circulated to the 294 delegates, if you haven’t done so already. This will ensure we make the next conference even more successful. Once again, my thanks go out to everyone for the organisation and participation of such an excellent event. A link will be circulated soon to delegates with the Conference content including photographs.

BDS Competitions and Awards: The following awards and competition prizes were presented at the BDS Conference 2018:

a) The Bateman Award for the authors of the best paper published over the past 2 years, which made a significant contribution to dam engineering, was given to Tim Blower and Scott Davidson for their paper entitled “Safeguarding Critical Infrastructure against Landslip Risk on a large dam in Albania”.

b) The YEF ICOLD Paper Competition 2018 for papers submitted to the BDS Conference by an international member of ICOLD’s Young Engineers Forum was awarded to Louis Coetzee from the South African National Committee on Large Dams for his paper entitled “Smart Construction Monitoring of dams with UAVs”. BDS provided a place at the BDS Conference 2018 and £500 towards expenses. Louis also presented his paper at the Conference.

c) The Best Young Professional Presenter Award 2018 for the best presentation at the BDS Conference 2018 by a BDS Young Professional Member was awarded to Alasdair Walker

d) The winner of the Photographic Competition 2018 with prize money of £200 was Jamie Lancaster; second place and £100 was presented to Paul Farnell; and third place and £50 was presented to Dougie Armour.

ICOLD 2019 – call for abstracts: Contribute your knowledge to 2019's leading international conference on dams. The call for abstracts for the International Commission on Large Dams Conference in June 2019 in Ottawa, Canada has been extended to 19th October 2018. More information can be found here.

BDS Mentoring Scheme: This recently launched BDS initiative is aimed at helping BDS Members of any age or discipline to achieve their goals within the dams and reservoirs profession, be that to improve knowledge regarding the design, operation, and maintenance of dams or to develop the necessary skills to become a Qualified Civil Engineer (QCE) under relevant reservoirs legislation. You can find out more here, and the application form is here.

BDS/EA Student Research Reports: A new page has been set up on the BDS website to share the work of the University Undergraduate’s Summer Research sponsored by the BDS and EA. The reports currently on this page include the 2016 “Review of current knowledge on hydrosuction and flushing for sediment management in the UK”, the 2017 research on “Geophysical methods for reservoir safety investigations” and the recently completed 2018 report and poster on “Ageing of embankment dams due to material degradation”. These can be found in the Members Area here.

Grouting for reservoir dams – a guide to good practice: Last chance to take up on CIRIA’s special offer: order your advance copy of this forthcoming title and save up to £20 (normal price £130, £65 for members). Offer ends 28 September 2018. This publication provides comprehensive, good practice guidance covering grouting in UK dams including investigation, design, grouting materials and processes, drilling and grouting plant, quality control and verification, and supporting case studies to illustrate issues identified. Environmental matters and contract considerations are also discussed.

Upcoming meetings and conferences: The next BDS meetings and international conferences, with further details on the website, are:

1) BDS evening meeting on 1st October 2018 from 18.00 at the ICE London on ‘Clywedog - a 50yr Review’ by Ian Hope & Jonathan Highfield (STW), Tony Bruggemann (Atkins), Sheridan Elliott (ITM Monitoring) and Tim Hill (Mott MacDonald). Note regional hubs have been set up in Glasgow, Warrington and Cardiff, where you can join a group to watch the event. More information on the hubs can be found here.

2) Technical Site visit to Williamsgate WTW Service Reservoir in Cockermouth, Cumbria on 15th November 2018, hosted by United Utilities. This is a great opportunity, especially for trainee Supervising Engineers, to see inside a service reservoir.

3) BDS evening meeting on 19th November 2018 from 18.00 at the ICE London on ‘Confined Spaces at Dams’ by Mark Scoggins.

4) ICOLD 2019 Annual Meeting at Ottawa, Canada on 9th to 14th June 2019.

As always, please let us know if you have any news or announcements related to dams and reservoirs, which you would like to share with BDS members in the next eNewsletter.
