BDS Conference: Registration has now closed for the 20th Biennial BDS Conference in Swansea. A record number have registered; with over 280 delegates including 12 exhibitors, who will experience the diverse site visits, workshops and technical sessions. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone to Swansea on 13 September 2018.

Meeting reports: The 26th ICOLD Congress & 86th Annual Meeting held in Vienna, Austria on 1 to 7 July 2018 was deemed a huge success, with nearly 50 delegates and accompanied people attending from the UK. My thanks go to everyone representing the BDS at the Congress’ technical sessions and the Technical Committee Meetings.  A write up will be published in the Dams & Reservoir Journal.

EA interpretation on timing of inspections under the Reservoirs Act 1975 (England): The Environment Agency, as enforcement authority for England, has produced their interpretation of the required timing of service reservoir inspections (available here) and the 1st inspection after a section 8 inspection (available here) under the Reservoirs Act 1975 in England. The guidance applies primarily to service reservoirs, which are non-impounding reservoirs constructed of brickwork, masonry, concrete or reinforced concrete, and to some reservoirs under construction.

RAGRS: The Reservoir Safety Advisory Group (RSAG) has a new name to better describe what the Group do – they are now called the Research Advisory Group for Reservoir Safety (RAGRS). They will be running a workshop at the BDS Conference this year to update delegates on current research and provide the opportunity to shape the future of reservoir research over the coming years. One important project, initiated through RAGRS, that has recently been kicked off is an update of the CIRIA Guide on Valves, pipework and associated equipment in dams. If you are interested in hearing more about this, please contact Peter Kelham peter.kelham@arup.com or myself.

Hydropower-Europe Project: ICOLD was successful in winning funds for this project with the aims to: (1) engage all relevant stakeholders; (2) address the challenges and prioritise needs (3) write and disseminate the research agenda and the technology road map up to 2050. The 3-year project starts in October 2018 and they are currently looking for hydropower stakeholders from government organisations, utility companies, consultancies, suppliers and academia. The project proposals are available here: Hydro Europe S1-3 and Hydro Europe S4-5. Please write in the first instance to: hontechsec@britishdams.org if you are interested in being involved with this landmark project.

ICE200 bicentenary videos: ICE has requested information to assist with the production of a 3-minute video on Akosombo Dam in Ghana. Can you help? Please respond to Richard.Armstrong@ice.org.uk

Upcoming meetings and conferences: The next BDS meetings and international conferences, with further details on the website, are:

a)    The Flood Expo at Birmingham's NEC will be held on 12 & 13 September 2018. More than 5,000 flood professionals, 200 suppliers and 100 expert-led seminars will come under one roof to connect, network and share knowledge. Your free Flood Expo ticket gets you into the co-running Contamination Expo Series, Marine & Coastal Civil Engineering Expo, RWM and Future Resource Expo. Visit the Flood Expo website for tickets, contact James Berryman on 01872 218007 or james.berryman@prysmgroup.co.uk to enquire about exhibiting and sponsorship opportunities.
