BDS Prize Competition Final:
Five papers have been selected from the entries to the BDS Prize Competition which is open to BDS members under 35 years of age. The submitted paper (2,500 words) is on a topic of dam engineering relating to the author's experience in reservoir research, design, construction, operation, maintenance, or supervision. Participants must be able to demonstrate that they have undertaken a significant role, relative to
their level of experience, in the project or topic. The five finalists will present their papers followed by questions from the audience. The judges will score their presentations and these will be added to the scores they received for their papers. The winners, to be announced at the end of the meeting, will receive \u00a3500 for first place with second and third prizes of \u00a3250 and \u00a3100. The Winner will also have their paper published in the BDS Journal \u201cDams and Reservoirs\u201d.<\/p>\r\n
BDS Photography Competiton:
The winners of the 2017 BDS Photography Competition will be announced on the night. The competition is run annually and open to members of the BDS and ICE as well as Engineering Students. Winners receive a cash prize (1st Prize \u00a3200; 2nd Prize \u00a3100; 3rd Prize \u00a350) and photographs is likely to feature on the British Dam Society Website and on the cover of the BDS Journal- \u201cDams and Reservoirs\u201d<\/p>\r\n

Synopsis of the evening meeting.
In the UK, good practice guidance on all aspects of grouting at dams is limited. To address this
current lack of guidance, this publication has been developed by providing a standalone good
practice guide for grouting at UK dams.
The guide is organised into 11 largely self-contained chapters, each focusing on an essential
element of grouting for new and existing dams, with emphasis placed on grouting at UK dams.
The chapters cover investigation, design, grouting materials and processes, drilling and grouting
plant, quality control of grout mixes and case histories. There is also coverage of environmental
matters and contract considerations.
The guide is aimed at reservoir owners and reservoir safety engineers concerned with the design
of new dams, remedial works at existing dams, and those responsible for the inspection,
monitoring, investigation, maintenance and repairs of dams and service reservoirs.
This presentation will aim to highlight elements of the various chapters.<\/p>\r\n

This required the drilling of 53,000 lin m of boreholes and the injection of 4,350 tonnes of cement grout. 1,700 tonnes of clay were also used in the repairs.<\/p>\r\n The 40m high M\u00f6hne cyclopean masonry dam was modified with the construction of a bottom gallery by drill and blast methods in the 1970\u2019s.<\/p>\r\n The 48m high Eder masonry dam was modified with the construction of a gallery by drill and blast methods and between 1991 and 1994 a total of 104 anchors, with a length ranging from 65 to 75m, were installed each with an ultimate tensile strength of 7.5 MN.<\/p>","clickable":true,"click":true,"className":"fc-event-past","timezone":"BST"},{"title":"SECED - Response of Earth Dams to Earthquake Events - Field Data and Numerical Modelling","cancelled":"0","location":"ICE London","start":"2017-11-29T18:00:00+00:00","end":"2017-11-29T20:00:00+00:00","allDay":false,"eventID":"311","status":false,"type":"Ev","desc":" Synopsis This talk presents the seismic response of the La Villita dam in Mexico under two different earthquake events. Analysis of the actual field data along with relevant static and dynamic nonlinear finite element analyses are presented and discussed to obtain an understanding of the behaviour of the dam. Such a validation is necessary to build confidence in the developed numerical models. Subsequently several issues related to the general performance of dams during an earthquake will be discussed, such as the stiffening effect of narrow canyon topographies, dam-reservoir interaction and the effect of the compliant dam foundation.<\/p>\r\n About the speaker Loizos\u2019s research expertise is in Computational Geomechanics. His doctoral research work at Imperial College concentrated on computational seismic analysis of earth dams and included extensive static and dynamic nonlinear finite element analyses and studies of dynamic dam-reservoir interaction, in particular during earthquakes. His subsequent post-doctoral research work at Cambridge was concerned with innovative distributed fibre-optic sensing of soil-structure interaction (SSI) problems along with relevant numerical analysis using appropriate finite element models. Examples of such SSI problems include foundation piles, energy piles, piled rafts, retaining walls and soil nails.<\/p>\r\n Further information Clywedog Reservoir has successfully been in service for 50 years. The reservoir comprises the main Clywedog 72m high concrete buttress dam and the Bwlch-y-Gle concrete core, embankment, saddle dam. Many earth dams around the world are located in zones characterised by moderate to high seismicity. Their seismic stability can be particularly critical for the safety of the areas in the downstream side and therefore an in-depth understanding of their response during earthquakes is required. Relevant experimental data are hard to obtain as full scale tests are very expensive to be performed and real data recorded from actual earthquakes are rare and sparse. On the other hand, sophisticated numerical models do exist nowadays, but they need to be calibrated against real measurements from previous earthquake events before they are used reliably for future design.<\/p>\r\n
Dr Loizos Pelecanos is a Lecturer in Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Bath. He joined the Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering in July 2016. He graduated from Imperial College London with a MEng in Civil Engineering (2009) and a PhD in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering (2013). He subsequently worked for 3.5 years as a Post-doctoral Research Associate in Civil Engineering at the Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction (CSIC) at the University of Cambridge.<\/p>\r\n

Fortunately, few catastrophic failures have occurred in the UK and Ireland in recent history. Since 1925, there has been no loss of life due to dam disasters. However, there have been many failures involving the breaching of embankments, along with numerous misses and other serious incidents.
An overview of specific hazards associated with dams will be presented, many of which are geotechnical in nature. A history of dam failures around the world and within the UK will be presented, along with case studies of a range of typical geotechnical remedial works to UK dams.
This talk will also provide a brief overview of the Reservoirs Act, that was introduced to Britain following a spate of deadly dam failures in the 1920s, along with an overview of the Reservoirs Act (Northern Ireland) that will be coming into force in the near future.
