What is BDS?

The British Dam Society is an Associated Society of the Institution of Civil Engineers. It consists of individual and corporate members. It is open to anyone wanting to share experience or knowledge of all aspects of dams and reservoirs.

BDS Conference 2018 - Ten days remaining to book

Registration for the 2018 BDS Conference in Swansea closes at midnight on 31st July 2018!

Delegate registrations have now passed 200 and continue to rise! Some site visits and workshops are close to capacity so book now to avoid disappointment.

ICID request for nominations to join Working Groups

The International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) has advised that they are setting up two new approved Working Groups and proposing three others.

Notice of Elections of New Members to the ICE Reservoirs Committee

Applications are requested for a forthcoming vacancy on the Reservoirs Committee. From the October 2018 meeting the Committee will be appointing three Supervising Engineers to the Committee.

Internal Erosion Update

Our representative on the ICOLD Embankments Technical Committee, Rod Bridle, has sent the following update:

This year there are two Internal Erosion Meetings, ICSE9 in Taiwan in November and the 26th European Working Group on Internal Erosion (EWGIE) in Milan.

Research on Flood Hydrology

The Environment Agency has advised that they are going to develop a ‘Flood Hydrology Road Map’ to set out a future vision for flood hydrology and a plan to deliver it across both forecasting and long-term flood risk, which will cover reservoir flood hydrology.

New Environmental Permitting Guidance for Reservoir Operators Produced by the Environment Agency

The Environment Agency, which regulates discharges from reservoir scour valves in England, has produced new environmental permitting guidance for reservoir operators.

Reservoirs (Scotland) Act 2011 - New Guidance on Discontinuance and Abandonment

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), who regulate reservoirs in Scotland under the Reservoirs (Scotland) Act 2011, has produced some new guidance on Discontinuance and Abandonment.
